Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the nurses¡¯ perceptions of nurse-initiated early defibrillation.
Methods: A focus group interview was conducted with 18 nurses (four groups) from a large teaching hospital in Korea. The interview explored their perceptions of nurse-initiated early defibrillation in the clinical setting. All interview data were recorded and transcribed and analyzed using qualitative content analysis.
Results: The four themes that emerged from the data were ¡°concern about negative perceptions,¡± ¡°limitations as a hospital nurse,¡± ¡°expecting positive results,¡± and the ¡°need for education/training.¡±
Conclusion: Nurses had concerns about electrocardiogram reading, and negative perceptions of other people related to paitent care. Nevertheless, they believe that early defibrillation by nurses would increase the chance of patient survival. Therefore, strategies and education are needed to lower psychological barriers.
